Even though it appears to be wet out, brush fires can still quickly get out of control. If you are planning on burning brush or grass contact the fire warden to make sure it is safe.
Certain types of open burning are allowed if they do not create a nuisance and if they are not prohibited by local ordinances. The types of fires which are allowed include:
· Campfires and outdoor barbecues
· Burning of leaves, brush, deadwood, tree cuttings, and weeds from your property
· Natural wood bonfires on festive occasions (natural wood includes timber, logs, boles, trunks, branches, limbs, stumps, untreated lumber, and clean wood pallets)
It is illegal to burn the following:
· Paper and cardboard
· Tires and other rubber products
· Treated, painted, or finished wood, and plywood
· Tarpaper or asphalt shingles
The burning of these materials is prohibited because they can cause serious health problems and damage the environment. Negative health effects are severely heightened in children, the elderly, and folks with respiratory issues. Many of the toxins released from burning these materials persist for long periods in the environment and enter the food chain.
You do not need an air pollution permit for allowable fires; however, you should contact your local forest fire warden prior to the burn. If you are considering burning large quantities of materials, you may need a permit from the Air Quality and Climate Division at (802) 828-1288.
